Project Overview
A homeowner in Ballymoney contacted me after their boiler had been losing pressure over several days and started cutting out during the night. By the time they called, they had been topping up the pressure every morning for nearly a week, and the heating was switching itself off around 2 or 3 in the morning.
I visited the same day to take a look. After running through my standard checks, I found that the expansion vessel had lost its charge. This is one of the most common causes of pressure loss in combi boilers, and it is something that often gets overlooked because the boiler can still run for a while before the problem gets bad enough to notice.
Work Completed
I re-pressurised the expansion vessel and tested the system pressure over a 30-minute observation period. The pressure held steady, and the boiler ran without cutting out. I also checked the system for any other faults while I was there, including testing the pressure relief valve and inspecting the flue.
The whole job took around an hour and a half, and the homeowner had their heating back running properly that same evening. No parts needed ordering, no follow-up visit required.
Outcome
The boiler has been running without any pressure issues since the repair. The homeowner now has their annual boiler service booked with me for September to keep things in good shape going forward.
